B SIDES & RARITIES

Volume #1

SONG SOURCE of RECORDING
What Does It Do To Your Heart 1999 Bside to When You're Gone. One of his best unreleased tracks and a gem of a Bside.
Low Life 1995 B side to Have You Ever Really Love a Woman. Written in Jamaica at the same time other songs were being put together for the 18 Til I Die album. Seeing that it was publically released one year prior to the album's release, this track was not clearly not what BA was wanting for the 18 album.
I Love Ya Too Much 1999 Bside to When You're Gone. As good as a few Bsides were in 1999 (What Does It Do To Your Heart), this one was not one of them.
Rock Steady (Demo version) 1996 Bside to Let's Make a Night to Remember. Written in late '94/early '95, BA wrote the song with a female singer in mind judging from the lyrics. This was probably what he gave to Bonnie Raitt before she decided to record it for her live album "Road Tested" in Oakland, California in July of 1995.
Where Do I Go From Here 2002 Bside to the Here I Am single from the Spirit soundtrack. This track was written with the movie in mind, but never made the final cut. Beautiful song that may not have fit in the movie, but would have added a nice touch to the released CD.
Prove It 1995 duet w/ South African singer Stevie Vann. Not released in North America. Great lyrics for a duet and a good song to boot.
Let's Talk About Love (Demo version) 1999 Bside to Cloud Number Nine. This is the demo that was sent to BA's friend and fellow Canadian Celine Dion which she subsequently recorded, released and named her smash 1997 album after. Likely written with Celine in mind as the style doesn't fit BA. Some of his better lyrics are on this track.
Open Road (Stripped) 2005 BSide to the Room Service single. BA performed this song acoustically many times on TV and radio shows while promoting the Room Service CD, but this one was recorded for an official release.
No One This is a bit of a mystery track from 2004 that somehow leaked out via the Internet. This song was one of the tracks recorded for the Room Service sessions, but obviously not included on the final CD. Rumour has it that BA was not happy with the lyrics. It may be one of the songs from the 2001 sessions that BA put aside in 2002 to write more songs. Track is fully produced including some french horn. I've mixed two sources of this song to create one complete track. The quality changes about 35 seconds into the song to a lower (but still very audible) quality.
Snippets (Mix of C'mon C'mon C'mon / Inside Out & Where Angels Fear to Tread 1999 Bside to Cloud Number Nine. If youhave the On A Day Like Today CD, there's nothing special about this track outside of the fact that three songs are linked together over a 3 minute track.
Cloud Number Nine (Demo version) 1999 Bside. This version includes some lyrcis that were taken out for the final version that made the CD.
I'm Not the Man You Think I Am Released on the International Anthology release in Autumn 2005, but not in Canada or the USA. A definitely different direction on this track for BA, but an interesting listen nonetheless.
Don't Give Up After helping breathe some life into Cloud Number Nine, UK producer Chicane needed BA's lead vocal assistance at this dance track which was written and recorded by Chicane. Song reached #1 in the U.K. in spring 2000.
Reggae Christmas First heard in 1984 on MTV (featuring a odd video including Pee Wee Herman) but released as a Bside to the Christmas Time single in late 1985. BA's first, but not last reggae song.

B SIDES & RARITIES

Volume #2

SONG SOURCE of RECORDING
It Ain't Over Yet 2005 track written for the Soundtrack of the film "Racing Stripes".
Diana 1985 B side to Summer of '69. Probably his best known and most succesful Bsides as it was played many radio stations who were caught up in the momentum of the Reckless album.
Hey Little Girl 1996 B side to Let's Make a Night to Remember. Nice little song by BA and Gretchen Peters that I had stuck in my head for months after my daughter was born.
Fearless (Demo Version) One of my favourite songs on the On A Day Like Today albums. Released as a Bside in 2000.
You Walked In 2004 Bside to the Flying single. Originally written in 1996 and released by a country band named Lonestar in 1997. BA recorded his own version for the song and released it in 2004.
Room Service (Stripped) 2005 Bside to the Room Service single. BA started closing his live shows with this version in the fall of 2004.
I Want It All Ya Mon. Clearly, recording in Ocho Rios, Jamaica had a major impact on this track. Released in 1996 as a Bside to The Only Thing That Looks Good On me Is You, this is BA doing his reggae thing. Meant to be a fun song right from the start as it would never fit musically on any BA album.
Lie to Me 1998 Bonus track released only in Japan and Europe on the On A Day Like Today album.
Blessing in Disguise 2004 Bonus track to the UK and Japan Room Service CD. A great rockabilly track that sounds more like Brian Setzer than Bryan Adams. It's only a two and a half minute song, but it's worth every second.
If Ya Wanna Be Bad Ya Gotta Be Good (Demo version) 1996 B side to Let's Make a Night to Remember and a major part of the live show in the form of the "Blues Jam"from 1999 to 2002.
Never Let Go 2006 release on "The Guardian" Soundtrack. Great sounding track that fits with the theme of heroism in the film.
Hey Baby 1998 Bonus track on the On A Day Like Today CD released only in Japan. Background vocals and co-written by Gretchen Peters.
Don't Turn Me Away 1980-1981 song never released on an album or Bside. I don't even remember how I got such a high quality recording of this song. Vintage early Adams with heavy guitar riffs and that high-pitched voice working for him.
Adamix (Mix of Somebody / It's Only Love / Diana & Fits Ya Good) 1985 Bside to Summer of '69.

B SIDES & RARITIES

Volume #3

SONG SOURCE of RECORDING
Hey Elvis 1996 B side to The Only Thing That Looks Good On me Is You. Played live frequently from March 1997 into early 1998 - often with an Elvis impersonator appearing in the audience.
You Can't Take Me 2002 alternate recording of the song that made it to the Spirit soundtrack. I actually prefer this version which features more guitar, less keyboards and less of a "produced sound.
Bin There Done That 1998 B side to On a Day Like Today. Some of your might get a kick of hearing BA's ex-girlfriend Cecile sing back-up and do a little Dutch vocal work.
How Do You Feel Tonight (Demo version) 1999 Bside to Best of Me single. Released fall of '99.
Little Red Rooster Released in 1996 as a BSide to Let's Make a Night to Remember. This was recorded likely in 1994 at a soundcheck before a show.
On a Day Like Today (Acoustic) 1998 B side to On a Day Like Today. Same version as what is on the CD, but this track just has BA's vocal, acoustic guitar and some strings.
Friday Night in London 2004 BSide to the Open Road single released in September '04. Very upbeat track with a feel similar to What Does It Do To Your Heart.
She Believes in Me 1998 B side to On a Day Like Today. Released in 1999 by Joe Cocker.
Back to You (Demo version) 1998 Bside to I'm Ready. Written while on tour in Spring of 1997 and likely recorded as a demo around the same time. Released version was recorded at the MTV Unplugged show in September of '97.
I Finally Found Someone (duet with Barbara Striesand) I'm sure when BA started releasing records in the early 80's, he didn't have a duet with Barbara Striesand in his career plan, but when Babs calls, who wouldn't jump at the opportunity to sing with her? This is a 1996 duet with Barbara from The Mirror Has Two Faces soundtrack.
Don't Drop That Bomb On Me (Acoustic Version) Re-recorded with just BA and a guitar in 2003 and released on a "Peace Songs" CD. Although the mixing on this version is noticeably sloppy, the performance by Keith's guitar work is outstanding. The song form has been altered from the original 1991 version as the pre-choruses have been cut. While this is one of the weaker tracks on the Waking up the Neighbours album (in my opinion), I really like this simpler version of the song. No overproduction here.
Christmas Time During the end of 1985, the Reckless buzz was slowing down, but this feel-good seasonal track was released by BA as a single.
Let Me Take You Dancing 1978 single release. BA's first single as a solo artist. Never released on CD. This is early BA before he had any creative control on his music. As a result, the record is sped up to the speed that makes BA sound like a (in his words...) a chipmunk.
That's Enough About You 1996 song.  Never been released.  As I recall, the lyrics were written by an English journalist who sent them to BA which quickly came up with the music and played it for the journalist via a telephone. The only known recorded version is from a telephone.

LIVE RARE MATERIAL - Volume #1 SONG LOCATION DATE & RECORDING GRADE WHAT MAKES IT A RARE RECORDING?
Track 1 Don't Let Him Know Kansas City, USA, 1982 BA never released this song on any album and did not perform it very often. This is the best known live recording of this song.
Track 2 One Good Reason Milan, Italy, July 6, 1988 For the 1988 tour, it is a rare recording. The song's arrangment is more rockier than what you would hear on early 1980 recordings when he performed it frequently.
Track 3 Thought I'd Died and Gone to Heaven Amsterdam, The Netherlands, November 11, 2001 Performed by the trio for only a handful of dates during the fall of 2001 into early 2002. This performance is one of the first times the band played it and it features the full band for the whole song - unlike the part unplugged/band arrangement that was heard at all shows between '92 and '95.
Track 4 Heat of the Night Holmdel, New Jersey, USA, August 29, 1997 Performed as a request during the US tour in August of '97, this arrangement is a cross between the unplugged version on Live Rare Materials Disc #2 and a full band version that was commonly performed between 1987 & 1992..
Track 5 Me Voila Chicoutimi, Canada, December 9, 2002 This is Here I Am - sung in French. Played only during the six Quebec dates in December of 2002 and probably not to be heard again on stage. The song was given French lyrics in support of the Spirit release in French in Fall 2002.
Track 6 The Best Was Yet to Come Vancouver, Canada, November 7, 2003 Rarely performed since 1988, this sweet little gem was dusted off for the western Canadian dates late in 2003. The arrangement is very simple with acoustic guitar and vocals taking you through the first verse.
Track 7 I'm Ready Bayreuth, Germany, April 25, 1997 Just five months before the song is completly re- arranged for the unplugged show, the band performs the song one last time in the rock format. This full-band rock arrangement was rarely heard at any BA concert after the Reckless tour ended in 1985.
Track 8 Bye Bye Johnny Helsinki, Finland, June 27, 1988 BA was writing new songs in 1988 for a new album in 1989. Although those songs or album never saw the light of day, BA road tested a number of the songs while touring Europe in the summer of '88. This is the only known recording of Bye Bye Johnny.
Track 9 Hiding From Love London, England, April 20, 1985 Although the song was a minor hit, BA did not perform it very often during the 1985 Reckless tour.
Track 10 Thrill Is Gone Regensberg, Germany, June 27, 1988 This is the only known recorded version of this song which is assumed to be one of the "new" songs BA was working on with Jim Vallance for an album that was scrapped mid-stride in 1989 so that BA could write better material with Mutt Lange which resulted in the hugely-successful Waking up the Neighbours CD.
Track 11 Low Life Toronto, Canada, May 20, 1995 This is the second time this song was performed live. It made it to some set lists duing the spring '97 18 Til I Die tour, but not since.
Track 12 Get Off Of My Back Schwaebisch Gmuend, Germany, July 13, 2002 Performed only a handful of times during the summer of 2002 tour dates and likely not to be put in the set list with any type of frequency from now on.
Track 13 You're Still Beautiful to Me Osaka, Japan, June 20, 2000 BA first played this song occasionally on stage in 1997 during the 18 Til I Die tour, but brought it back during the Best of Me tour with the trio. Performed frequently between January and June 2000. Not played after June 2000 when the band returned to playing larger venues in Europe.
Track 14 Rebel Tokyo, Japan, February 10, 1988 Performed only once in concert. This is that time.
Track 15 Black Pearl Osaka, Japan, March 11, 1997 Song was performed during the Spring of '97, but not since.
Track 16 Christmas Time Prince George, Canada, December 2, 2000 This song is a little nugget that was released in December 1985 during the Reckless hype. Although many concerts around the Holiday season have taken place since then, BA introduced the song into his live show for the first time in December 2000 when touring the west part of Canada
Track 17 Do I Have to Say the Words? Karlsruhe, Germany, March 17, 2003 This song made an ultra-rare post-1992 appearance in Karlsruhe, Germany. The arrangement, however, features a reggae groove rather than the rock feel that we know from the CD and previous live shows. This has to rank up with one of the biggest surprises of any song he's played live in a different arrangement.
Track 18 Let Me Down Easy Tokyo, Japan, February 8, 1988 Although the recording is weak, it's still a treat to hear the 1988 band pull out a rarity such as this one. While performing five night in Tokyo in February of 1988 to support Into the Fire, BA plays his song that he wrote for Roger Daltrey in 1985. This is the only known recording of BA performing this song.

LIVE RARE MATERIAL - Volume #2 SONG LOCATION DATE & RECORDING GRADE WHAT MAKES IT A RARE RECORDING?
Track 1 Is Your Mama Gonna Miss Ya? New York City, USA, August 10, 1992 Although the Waking Up the Neighbours tour lasted over 2 years, the lead track from the album was performed less than 10 times.
Track 2 Remember Edmonton, Canada, January 24, 2000 Not performed consistently since the Reckless tour until 2000 when the trio brings it back for the Canadian tour and a few months beyond that.
Track 3 Jealousy Dortmund, Germany, June 18, 1992 While peaking in popularity around the world behind the success of Waking Up the Neighbours, BA pulls out a gem from the past with an ultra-rare performance of Jealousy from his 1981 CD You Want It You Got It. I'm not aware of this song being performed live between 1987 or any time after with this one exception.
Track 4 Deux Freres Sous Le Soleil Chicoutimi , Canada, December 9, 2002 At the same concert that featured Me Voila (French version of Here I Am), a bigger treat came later in the show when the band played a full-band version of Brothers Under the Sun. This song was only played during the Quebec shows in December '02 and the English version has been rarely (if ever) been performed live.
Track 5 Bouncing Of the Walls Milan, Italy, July 6, 1988 Although the music is different, many of the lyrics from this rocker end up in the song House Arrest. Style of song may have been what BA's early written material was like for the Waking Up the Neighbours album.
Track 6 Don't Drop that Bomb on Me Karlsruhe, Germany, March 17, 2003 At the same show that featured a reggae version of Do I Have to Say the Words (see Live Rare Materials Volume #1), BA pulls out song that had never been performed live before: Don't Drop that Bomb on Me. The arrangement is simple as it's Keith on Electric guitar and BA on vocals. Given the war tension at the time, the song is an appropriate choice, but nobody could have expected it.
Track 7 Heat of the NIght (acoustic) London, England, May 6, 1994 An "unplugged" style performance of the only Into the Fire song that was included in the set during the 1991-1994 tour.
Track 8 Let Me Take You Dancing Fukuoka, Japan, March 9, 1997 This had never been performed live when it was played on the B-stage for two nights only in Japan. This is the first of the two performances. Probably one of the most surprising songs BA's every played live.
Track 9 No Way Out Helsinki, Finland, June 27, 1988 This is the only known recording of another song from the "lost album" of 1989 that BA scrapped to go work with Mutt Lange. This track has a rougher edge to it which reminds me of The Clash.
Track 10 We Don't Know What We're Doing Lowell, Mass, USA, March 29, 2001 The origin of this song is not known, except for the fact that it was first heard in January 2001 at the World Sport Awards in London. Lyrically, this song is a dud, but it's a good rock groove and doesn't take up more than 2:30 of your time. Performed live during the early 2001 shows in Canada and the US, but not since.
Track 11 Ballad of Mary and Joe Paris, France, June 4, 1997 A rock-style Christmas song performed only once live and never released. If the song remains unreleased, this is the only known version available.
Track 12 Baby Wears Black Osaka, Japan, November 4, 1983 This is old-school BA at his best. A crazy rocker that never made a BA album, but that was performed often during the Cuts Like a Knife tour dates usually near the end of the show to get the audience riled up. Not his best song-writing showcase, but a great early-80's song for an audience.
Track 13 Victim of Love Fukuoka, Japan, March 9, 1997 Believed to be played as a request from the audience, Victim of Love makes it's one and only post-1988 tour appearance during the Japan '97 tour.
Track 14 Remembrance Day Calgary, Canada, November 12, 2003 This is one of the two songs from the Into the Fire album that was never performed live - until November of 2003 when BA played it twice to pay tribute to the soldiers who have died in WW I and II as well as in the war in Iraq. For you trivia buffs...the only other song from Into the Fire never to be performed live is......Home Again.
Track 15 When the Night Comes Roskilde, Denmark, June 30, 1990 This is the only full-band recorded version of this song either on stage or in the studio. The song was a highlight to many during the 1991-1994 concerts when BA played it alone with a guitar, but to hear it with the full band is a treat. One wonders if BA wished he kept this gem for himself. I know I wish he did
Track 16 Rose Marie London, England, November 6, 1991 While headlining at London's Wembley Arena the day after his 32nd Birthday, BA celebrates breaking the Guinness Book of World Records as holding the #1 spot for the longest time with Everything I Do\'85 by invitied the former record holder Slim Whitman to the stage to perform his 1950's hit Rose Marie. This track includes comments by Slim Whitman about how BA had contacted him about coming to London as well as a duet between Slim and BA performing the song.
Track 17 Diana Mannheim, Germany, June 15, 1991 Song will probably never be played again live due to the Princess's passing in 1997.

SONGS WRITTEN BY BA #1 (1981-1985)

Note: This was a very prolific time for BA the songwriter. He was still working at establishing himself as a solo artist and he and Jim Vallance were writing hundreds of songs both for BA's albums and for other artists. The style of these songs is typical of BA's early albums - straight ahead rock n' roll material.

SONG WHO RECORDED THE SONG AND WHEN?
Track 1 Cover Girl Recorded by Prism (1981)
Track 2 Don't Let Him Know Recorded by Prism (1981)
Track 3 You Walked Away Again Recorded by Prism (1981) BA performed this song live on occasion
Track 4 Jump Recorded by Loverboy (1982) BA performed this song live on occasion in 1983.
Track 5 Dangerous Recorded by Loverboy (1982).
Track 6 No Way to Treat a Lady Recorded by Bonnie Raitt (1983) then by three other female artists through the 1980's.
Track 7 Teacher Teacher Recorded by .38 Special (1984) Written for the Teachers movie soundtrack.
Track 8 Back to Paradise Recorded by .38 Special (1984)
Track 9 Edge of a Dream Recorded by Joe Cocker (1984) Written for the Teachers movie soundtrack and one of three BA songs covered by Joe Cocker.
Track 10 Another Heartache Recorded by Rod Stewart (1984)
Track 11 Can't Wait All Night Recorded by Juice Newton (1984)
Track 12 All Sing Together A unique Celtic song recorded by The Irish Rovers (1984)
Track 13 Tears Are Not Enough Recorded by Northern Lights (1985). This is the African-Relief song for Canadian musicians that followed the success of Band Aid's "Do They Know It's Christmas". Recorded by a roster of Canadian talent including Neil Young, Anne Murray and Geddy Lee from Rush.
Track 14 Let Me Down Easy Recorded by Roger Daltrey (1985)
Track 15 Rebel Recorded by Roger Daltrey (1985) BA recorded this song himself for the 1987 Into the Fire album after adding a third verse that wasn't on the Daltrey version.

SONGS WRITTEN BY BA #2 (1986-2000)

Note: After the commerical success of Reckless, BA became more protective of his original songs and did not release them to other artists as the rate he did in the early 1980's. Most songs on this collection were written more with specific artists in mind and styles different than what you would hear on a BA album.

SONG WHO RECORDED THE SONG AND WHEN?
Track 1 It Should Have Been Me Recorded by Carly Simon (1986) and produced by BA. BA has described the experience on working on this song in the studio as horrible.
Track 2 Back Where You Started Recorded by Tina Turner (1987) This song features BA and band playing the instruments and BA on background vocals.
Track 3 When The Night Comes Recorded by Joe Cocker (1988). This version is a live version. Also, one of BA's best song's live in the 90's was performed acoustically by himself on stage. Perhaps BA's best song that he let get away.
Track 4 Nature of the Beast Recorded by The Law (1991) This is one of the leftover songs from the Into the Fire writing sessions in 1986 with Jim Vallance. Potentially written for Tina Turner around the same time as Back Where You Started
Track 5 Feels Like Forever Recorded by Joe Cocker (1992) Written for the movie soundtrack The Cutting Edge.
Track 6 Why Must We Wait Until Tonight? Recorded by Tina Turner (1993) Written for the movie soundtrack What's Love Got To Do With It?
Track 7 What Would It Take Recorded by Anne Murray (1996)
Track 8 Glitter Recorded by Motley Crue (1997). Co-written with members of the rock band for the comeback attempt album.
Track 9 You Walked In Recorded by Lonestar (1997) Co-written with Mutt Lange for a country act.
Track 10 The Only Thing That Looks Good One Me Is You Recorded by country artist Lorrie Morgan (1997)
Track 11 Another Year Has Gone By Recorded by Celine Dion (1998)
Track 12 She Believes In Me Recorded by Joe Cocker (1999)
Track 13 Follow Me Recorded by Mel C on her debut solo CD (2000)
Track 14 The Way You Make Me Feel Recorded by Ronan Keating (2000)
Track 15 Heaven (Candlelight Mix) Recorded by DJ Sammy (2002)

SONGS WRITTEN BY BA #3 (2001-????)

Note: In the new century, BA was writing with many different writers and apparently more comfortable giving songs away for other artists to record.

SONG WHO RECORDED THE SONG AND WHEN?
Track 1 Cure For Love Recorded by David Chavez (2003). Track almost sounds like a demo version, but was released by this former-Baywatch TV actor. BA sings a very up-front backup vocal.
Track 2 East Side Story Recorded by Chicane (With BA on lead vocals.) (2003)
Track 3 Over My Head Recorded by Robert Fleishcman (ex-Journey) (2001). Written by BA and Bill Pickell and released in 2002/3 on Fleischman's World In Your Eyes CD. . This song is a major throwback to mid-80's power ballads by bands such as Survivor. For the 21st century, I'm glad BA gave this one away.
Track 4 Drive Recorded by Shannon Noll from Australia who was the Australian Idol winner in 2003. Song released as an Australian single in April 2004. This song has BA all over it and Shannon's vocal style matches the song very well. I'd love to hear BA's version of this song. Very strong track.
Track 5 Keep Talking Recorded by Lulu (2003) The UK singer released this is as her lead-single in Spring 2004.
Track 6 Keep Talking Recorded by Chris Norman (ex-Smokie member) in 2003. Not as strong as the Lulu rendition, but worth a listen.
Track 7 If You Believe Recorded and co-written by Andrea Remanda for the 2004 film "Ella Enchated"
